CHÉRICOT: Chérie + cotton. “Chérie” means “beloved” in French.
Problems such as itching, rashes, chills, and severe menstrual pain are concerns that many women experience when using sanitary napkins. As we continued manufacturing napkins, we often heard these serious concerns and began development to find ways to reduce them.
When we investigated the current situation, we found that many women who experienced severe skin problems with sanitary napkins tended to use “cloth napkins.” The major difference between disposable and cloth napkins is whether the material that directly touches the skin is “cotton” or “synthetic fiber.” Based on this, we hypothesized that skin troubles might be caused by synthetic fibers not suiting the skin or body.
Based on this hypothesis, we developed (and tested) a product in 2000 that reviewed the material of the center sheet. Women who used it gave us positive feedback such as “my skin and body troubles improved.”
With the goal of creating “a disposable napkin with functionality exceeding cloth napkins” [gentle on the skin, convenient, and leak-proof], we went through various prototypes and completed an initial model using 100% cotton nonwoven fabric for the center sheet.
While the initial model achieved a “100% cotton center sheet,” a challenge remained: the side guards for leak prevention were still made of synthetic fibers. If the side guards were made of cotton, they could not fulfill the basic function of “containing menstrual blood and preventing side leakage.”
After that, we continued to receive requests from customers such as, “We want products that are gentle on sensitive skin and made entirely of cotton where it touches the skin.” As a small manufacturer with a philosophy of creativity and practice, we leveraged flexible development capabilities to address these needs and restarted development in 2017, 17 years after the initial release.
If we could make the side guards (including the wings) from 100% cotton, we could create a cotton napkin that combines the full functionality of cloth napkins with the absorbency and convenience of disposable ones. Therefore, under the concept of “comfort even during your period,” we focused on the following five points.
One of the most difficult aspects of product development was achieving stable manufacturing and quality control. Switching the side guards (including wings) from synthetic fibers to 100% cotton caused issues such as lack of strength, difficulty in developing cotton materials with leak prevention functionality, and instability unique to soft, fluffy, stretchable cotton during production. We overcame these various challenges using over 50 years of expertise and know-how in napkin manufacturing, taking about two years to complete.
In 2019, CHÉRICOT Organic Cotton was completed.
To deliver CHÉRICOT to as many women as possible, we held exhibitions in various locations and conducted surveys to utilize feedback in product development. Here are some of the heartfelt comments we received from users.
